it seems disconnecting the battery is important especially since your service manual mentions it. I do understand you have a different setup than my 1991. Nissan could have learned later, after my 1991 manual was produced, it was appropriate to disconnect the battery. Who knows? All we can confirm for sure at this point is that if you bled the system properly and still have a spongy pedal, the ABS is the culprit and needs more attention.
